A greeting should never be omitted. You will use different degrees of formality depending on whom you are writing to.

Some Rules

Even thought to adding a comma after the name (as in English) is common, this is a mistake.

Example

  • Querida Ana,

Instead, a colon should be used after the name.

  • Querida Ana: ✔️

Also, you add a comma after greetings such as, hola or buenos días, and before the name.

Some Rules

For short goodbyes (without a verb), use a comma.
