FINAL: SYRACUSE 89, CANISIUS 77

It was the Judah Mintz show in the second-half of this win for the Orange.

The sophom*ore guard showed in just the second game of the season how he’s the engine that drives the Syracuse offense with a career-high 26 points. Mintz scored 19 of those points in the second half with his ability to draw fouls being key in that.

Mintz had a four-point play and two separate 3-point plays. He also displayed an improving outside shot from beyond the arc, hitting two 3-pointers. Mintz was 8-of-9 at the free throw line.

J.J. Starling had a solid stat line of 15 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Naheem McLeod led Syracuse with 9 rebounds.

Syracuse is 6-of-16 and has just one from beyond the arc in the second half after hitting five in the first half.

10:01 remaining: Syracuse 66, Canisius 48.

Judah Mintz really got in a groove here, scoring 12 straight points. The stretch included a 4-point play and two 3-point plays. Judah’s ability to draw fouls and cash in at the free throw line is a key piece to the Orange offensive puzzle.

Judah Mintz talked through the offseason about improving his outside shot. He’s made a couple in this game, including one that resulted in a 4-point play.

Something that has stood out so far is Canisius’ ability to get inside pretty easily. SU’s defense needs to pick up screens better and pick up the pace.

The shooting is pretty even at this point. SU is at 50% while Canisius is at 47%.

A weeknight crowd has been pretty quiet so far at the Dome put aside a few dunks by the Orange and even then there was short bursts of noise.
