SU's bid for biggest win of the season falls short in final minute at Miami: Final score, recap (1)

Final: Miami 82, Syracuse 78

The Orange’s best opportunity for a big win so far this year goes by the wayside and the NCAA tournament bubble remains out of eyesight.

Would have been an impressive, impressive victory, coming on the road against the No. 17 team in the country. Jesse Edwards and Joe Girard III played very well but Judah Mintz showed some rare growing pains. He was going up against a backcourt that included a pair of fourth-year players and it showed.

Orange also got beaten up on the offensive boards, especially in the second half, by a shorter but more physical opponent.

Syracuse still doesn’t have a Quad 1 win, and we all know how important those are when the NCAA tournament field is built.

17:23: A strong start for Syracuse, bumping its lead up to 8. Joe Girard III taking advantage of a rare size advantage and showing some back-down game.

15:11: Syracuse opens the second half by bumping its lead to 53-44. Jesse Edwards with 8 points in the first four minutes of this half, taking advantage of his size mismatch. Joe Girard III with 12 points and four assists.

One game after being lifted by its four freshmen, it’s the veteran Orange who are leading the way in this upset bid.

12:10: Miami picks up some full-court pressure on defense and forces a third turnover from Judah Mintz. Syracuse now leads 57-51, but Miami has the ball and some momentum.

11:42: Syracuse still leads 57-51. First bout of foul trouble for the Orange as Jesse Edwards picks up third trying to pull an offensive rebound out of the hands of a Miami player. Pretty weak foul call in my opinion but probably a ball a valuable big man should just surrender.

10:29: Syracuse extends its lead to 59-51 on a Jesse Edwards putback. Miami calls a timeout. Syracuse looking to close out its biggest win of the year.

8:33: Jesse Edwards just dominating. 22 points right now. Orange leads 61-55.

7:55: A turnover as Joe Girard III tries to beat a trap by getting the ball to Edwards. Miami gets a 3-point play. One-possession game with 7:55 left to play.

3:43: Oof. A rough stretch for Syracuse gives Miami a 71-70 lead. Nijel Pack pulled up from way, way, way behind the 3-point line. The type you traditionally let an opponent have. Then a Mintz turnover sends Miami out for a layup the other way. Buckle up.

Hurricanes’ 3-point shooting has evened out in the second half, allowing them to pull ahead. Syracuse’s still has to even out. We’ll see if that’s the difference.

2:49: As I write that, Justin Taylor buries a 3-pointer. Miami pulls back ahead with a Jordan Miller offensive rebound and 3-point play.

1:40: Ouch. A few youthful mistakes by Judah Mintz allow Miami to build up a five-point lead. Mintz took the ball 1-on-2 in transition, tried to draw a foul and settled for a bad-angle shot. Then turned the ball over leading to a run out.

1:23: Joe Girard III buries his first 3-pointer of the night. Now the Orange’s 3-point shooting is evening out. Syracuse trails 78-76 but Miami has the ball. A critical 83 seconds for the Syracuse men’s basketball season.

:48: Miami can’t score but maintains possession with an offensive rebound.

:10.7: Mintz takes it himself trying to tie the game. He turns it over for the fifth time against a veteran Miami team. He’s been so good this season but his youth has shown tonight against an old and very good backcourt. Hurricanes lead 80-76 after making the free throws. A very bad spot for the Orange now.

Halftime: Syracuse 38, Miami 34

Syracuse in position to upset the No. 17 team in the country halfway through. Orange lead 38-34. Jesse Edwards takes advantage of his size edge to lead the way with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Judah Mintz did a really nice job settling down and figuring things out after a tough start.

Miami only shot 2-for-12 from the 3-point line, which will make life tough against the zone, But Syracuse only hit 3-of-12. Hurricanes did navigate two fouls on two key players and keep the game close. Fun second half coming.

Syracuse also turned the ball over just four times after committing three in the first few minutes. A huge change in the game after the rough start.

First half

15:57: A very bad start for Syracuse, which is trailing 11-2 at the first timeout. Miami already appears to have a player who is very comfortable catching and scoring in the middle in Jordan Miller. The Hurricanes also have an early 3-pointer from Nijel Pack. Syracuse always struggles with teams that have inside-outside combos.

Miami’s interior is short but physically strong and doing a good job going chest-to-chest with Jesse Edwards and making him take difficult shots. Miami’s defense relies on forcing turnovers and SU has obliged by committing 3 early.

15:52: A positive development for Syracuse as Miami star Isaiah Wong picks up second foul defending Judah Mintz.

10:14: A better stretch for Syracuse. Mounir Hima came in early for Jesse Edwards and provided a spark on defense. Orange trails 18-11 but will have two free throws coming from Symir Torrence.

Torrence is in for Judah Mintz who has had a tough go early. He’s penetrated well but then run into trouble as Miami collapses, either forcing shots (0-for-2) or struggling to find a teammate.

8:38: Miami brings in Isaiah Wong with two fouls as Syracuse closes to 20-16 on a Benny Williams 3-pointer.

7:27: Syracuse still within four at the under-8 timeout, trailing 22-18.

3:26: A great stretch from Syracuse started by a Judah Mintz 3-point play. Syracuse also gets a 3-pointer from Justin Taylor and a 3-point play from Joe Girard III. That helps give Syracuse its first lead of the game.

Hurricanes shooting 2-for-11 on 3-pointers. Not a strength and tough to beat Syracuse when you don’t make many and you’re not dominant inside. Orange leads 29-26 and will have two free throws coming.

2:15: Jesse Edwards makes two free throws to give Syracuse a 33-28 lead. Miami big man Norchad Omier, who has done a nice job on Edwards, also has two fouls. Some key foul trouble for the Hurricanes in the first half.

Pregame

Tonight’s game features two of the hottest teams in the ACC. Both Syracuse and Miami have won nine of their past 11 games. Only Clemson has performed better over that stretch in the ACC.

For Miami, that success has led to Top 25 appearances. For Syracuse, it has begun to reverse the damage done by a poor start to the season.

Miami advanced to the Elite Eight last year on the strength of its explosive guards and is looking to replicate that formula. Slashing star Isiah Wong returns and ranks fifth in the ACC in scoring at 17.2 points per game. Syracuse’s defensive effort will have to start with keeping him out of the lane.

Like it did against Notre Dame, Syracuse will have to take advantage of a vulnerable interior. The Hurricanes don’t have any regular rotation players taller than 6-foot-9, and they are prone to giving up offensive rebounds.

Starting lineups: Syracuse rolling out the usual group of Judah Mintz, Joe Girard III, Chris Bell, Benny Williams and Jesse Edwards.

Miami also with its usual group of Isaiah Wong, Nijel Pack, Wooga Poplar, Jordan Miller and Norchad Omier.
